Incredible Amenities Await You on the Crystal Coast
The Crystal Coast is home to more than 100 restaurants as well as countless public access points to the beach.
One of the most popular public access points is known as “The Circle” in central Atlantic Beach. This attraction is a collection of stores, houses and amusement park rides, all along the ocean at the end of the causeway from the bridge to Morehead City.
Recently, the Circle underwent a redevelopment, making it an even more popular attraction.
Meanwhile, the Crystal Coast offers its residents plenty of diving and fishing opportunities.
In fact, it has the distinction of being considered one of two spots in North America where the Gulf Stream’s warm waters approach the coastline and create a “wreck diver’s dream,” according to Scuba Diving magazine.
This explains the area’s nickname, the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” After all, there are more than 2,000 vessels that have sunk along the North Carolina coast.
The Crystal Coast’s proximity to the Gulf Stream also makes this area a popular fishing destination. In fact, this area has the longest fishing season on the Atlantic Coast.
Consequently, this area hosts one of the largest fishing tournaments in the world each year: The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, based out of Morehead City.
Some of the fish that have been caught along the Crystal Coast include: bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, red drum, false albacore, sea trout, striped bass, cobia, sailfish, dolphin and wahoo.
Other Attractions That Make the Crystal Coast So Fabulous
The North Carolina Seafood Festival is hosted here annually. Considered one of the largest festival in the state, it has been held in Morehead City for nearly 20 years!
Meanwhile, in Atlantic Beach, Fort Macon attracts plenty of Civil War history buffs. That’s because this fort is a treasure trove of historical significance, having changed hands several times between the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War.
Other attractions that residents love to check out include:
- North Carolina Aquariums at Pine Knoll Shores and Manteo
- Historic Beaufort
- North Carolina Maritime Museum
- Harkers Island
